Dr Toner obtained his medical qualifications in the UK and completed 9 years of anaesthesia training in Surrey and London. During this time, he developed a special interest in improving patient-centred outcomes after surgery through the application of the best available evidence and by conducting large-scale clinical trials.

He completed Fellowships in hepatobiliary surgery, liver transplantation and research, and was recently awarded a Doctor of Medicine research degree from Cambridge University.

He relocated to Perth with his family in 2014 and works as a specialist at Royal Perth Hospital, providing a broad range of anaesthetic services to a high-risk, complex adult population. He is a Fellow of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists, a Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Western Australia and the Chair of the Royal Perth Hospital Anaesthesia and Pain Medicine Research and Audit Group.
